Notice period and date
For flats the legal notice period is at least three months, to a termination date customary in the locality, unless the lease says otherwise. What counts is when the notice reaches the landlord.
The right form
- In writing and signed
- For married couples and registered partners in the family home, both sign
- Send it by registered post and keep the receipt
Leaving early
If you want to leave outside the termination dates, you can propose a suitable, solvent replacement tenant willing to take over the lease on the same terms. You are then usually released from your obligations.
Support
Tenants’ associations and the cantonal conciliation authorities advise if anything is unclear.
